WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — About half a dozen victims are warning consumers to stay away from a mobile mechanic accused of taking money and not completing the work.
In the last week, CBS12 has spoken to five people who said they were ripped off by the same mobile mechanic. All of them told us they responded to a Craigslist ad.
Robert Piccirillo owns a t-shirt shop called Fat Enzo in downtown West Palm Beach. Back in June, he and his partner Matthew Piazza needed someone to fix their company car.
“We wanted to sell it to put the money back into the company,” Piccirillo said.
That's when they found a mechanic on Craigslist who came out and inspected their black Chrysler.
“I was really naive, and I just trusted somebody who came here and said they were going to provide a service,” Piazza said.
Piazza said the estimate was correct and the mechanic charged him $508 for parts and labor.
They said the mechanic gave them excuse after excuse and never came back to fix the car.
Unfortunately, there is little action victims can take in cases like this, according to Michael Edmondson with the State Attorney's Office. He said scammers know how to work the system.
“They know if they begin a repair and then they wait for a period of months and go back and do something else to perpetuate the service being provided then that is again a civil complaint,” Edmondson said.
We spoke with the mechanic over the phone who said the victims claims are false. He agreed to meet with us, but never did.
Now, these guys are sharing the lesson they learned the hard way.
“Basically, if you don't know anything about cars, go to the closest friend you got and hire someone. Go through a reputable business. Don't do the Craigslist thing,” Piazza said.
(Note from FAT ENZO: The person who did this goes by the aliases "Josh Hansen" and "Parker" but he may have others. His cell phone number is 561-856-4132. He looks like a weasel and smokes from an electronic apparatus. He likes to say that he has over 20 years experience and he'll say that he can provide references. He most probably will ask you to write the check to somebody else. Just speaking for ourselves, that person was "Crystil Murch".)
